Tetris Tension
Made with: Maya 6.0, Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5

Tetris Tension is a short animation I created for my Production for Computer Animation course along with fellow classmate Taz Kang. It was a semester-long project we produced entirely with 3D computer animation using Maya 6.0.

The concept behind this animation is that inside a typical game of Tetris is a world the player normally doesn't ever see. The game is run behind the scenes by large machines, and mechanical arms drop the tetris pieces into the game board that the player sees. The pieces themselves are actually ships piloted from inside by small alien-like creatures.

This story is about two pilots, Zoom and Zoma, who unexpectedly cross paths during a routine game of Tetris. Zoma is a stern, uptight expert pilot who takes his job seriously, while Zoom is a novice who is very jittery and still inexperienced with the game. Their pieces are lined up next to each other ready to drop into the game, with Zoma scheduled to go first. However, Zoom becomes confused and inadvertently drops his piece out of order, at the same time as Zoma drops his! An angry Zoma haults the game and confronts the blundering Zoom, but winds up biting off a little more than he can chew.

My partner and I shared all the duties during the preproduction phase of this animation, including pitching the idea to our professor, writing the script and the list of assumptions, storyboarding and concept sketching. In addition, my specific contributions to this project include:

- creating the 3D models for the character Zoma and the cockpits for the tetris pieces
- 50% of overall animation and rendering
- post-production of the final movie, including editing the scenes and compositing the soundtrack
- creating and running the project website
